Well this is my final piece for Jason Seiler's caricature course. I chose to do RDJ as Sherlock Holmes because I thought it would be a good portfolio piece for the future as the film isn't out until Xmas, and because RDJ is very difficult to caricature I think. I am really pleased with the final painting, I think it's as good as I can do right now. Below are some of the reference and sketches I did along the way:

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Jason for his fantastic feedback and support!

Jumpin' Jehosphat!! Neil, that is just incredible. This would be more than worthy of publication in any magazine, anwhere. The level of detail, the likeness, the composition, the pose....it's faultless!
Well done!! Great portfolio piece as well.
Superb render. My only suggestion would be to emphasize his eyebrows and the bags under his eyes, and maybe eyelashes.
This is really,really nice...
Amazing job !!!
Top job Neil. Ken said it all....
Very good, Neil! I agree, I think this is a new level for your work. Keep it up!
Thanks very much guys!
This is an incredible painting, and a dead-on likeness. It doesn't scream Sherlock to me, though.
Thanks Pat - the film being made is by Guy Ritchie, and I doubt it will be particularly accurate to the original Conan Doyle Holmes. I went with the look that it appears RDJ will have in the film rather than the big coat and deer-stalker that most would identify as Holmes. I hope the film is good, have to wait and see I guess... :)
Stunning work Neil - very impressive.
You must be pleased how it turned out.
Well done.
Beautiful job Neil, you nailed it!!!
Beautiful, beautiful piece !!
great!!!
Wonderful. Looks like you got a lot out of Jason's course, as did I. Your painting was great before, but now it's at new levels!
p.s. I noticed you got a mention in Derren Brown's PORTRAITS book. Nice!
Thanks again for all the great comments! Yes Dan, I had to do a double-take when I got my copy of Derren's book - nice of him to mention me, it was a surprise to say the least!
Great work Neil!
Nice job Neil, you worked very hard on every assignment . . . it's all about working and studying hard and you do both very well! Keep it up! Oh, and I'm not surprised Darren mentioned you . . . the roles should be reversed, or at least one day they will be.
Very nice job mate!!!!!
FUCKIN LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You've captured his expression perfectly... awesome!
